The Charlotte Observer recently featured an article discussing the need for an alternative source of transportation for the people in the Lake Norman region. The first suggestion was the development of the North Corridor commuter train which is supposed to run from Center City Charlotte to Mooresville in southern Iredell County.
The proposed North Corridor Commuter Rail Project will operate along 30 miles of the existing Norfolk Southern rail line, and will be developed in two phases. Phase 1 is projected to cost $261 million, be completed by 2012, and provide service between Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mount Mourne and Uptown Charlotte. Phase 2 is estimated at $112 million and will add increased service levels by 2019.
When complete, the station stops will include:
Mount Mourne
Davidson
Cornelius
Sam Furr
Huntersville
Hambright
Eastfield
Harris/NC 115
Derita
Charlotte Gateway Station
The North Corridor LYNX Purple Line will be 25 miles long, feature 10 stations, 9 park and ride lots, and 1200 parking spaces. Service is said to run 6a.m. to 8p.m. Monday - Friday, with the option for special event service.
